New Credit Card Technology – Contactless Payments
It can sometimes be hard to know where to look with so many different credit card offers and developments currently on the market. However, one new piece of credit card technology that is definitely worth looking at is the new trend for making contactless payments.
This is an interesting credit card development that has the potential to revolutionise how we pay for goods just as much as Chip and PIN did when it first came into the mainstream. The idea behind contactless payments is exactly as its name suggests – paying for goods using your credit card, without the card ever needing to leave your hand.
Essentially, all you need to do is hold the special chip in your contactless payment card over the card reader. This should register and the payment should then go through. This means that you typically won’t need to use your PIN to make payments, although you can still be asked to enter it from time to time to make sure you are the person with the right to use the card – an important security measure to help keep the system safe.
At the moment, contactless payments are still in their relative infancy. You can currently only make fairly small purchases using this type of payment card (usually up to the value of around £15), but more and more retailers are starting to use the special card readers needed for the payments. Also, increasingly when you apply for a new credit card, you will find that it comes with contactless payments enabled – this is definitely something to look out for when you are deciding which card to apply for as we can expect the technology to become more prevalent over the next few years.
Overall, contactless payment cards offer a new and quick way to pay for goods using your credit cards, helping to speed up the payment process – something that many people are sure to welcome given the hectic pace of modern life!
